The Bashkan of Gagauzia, Evghenia Guțul, has been placed in pre-trial detention for 20 days. The decision was made today by the Chisinau Court, Ciocana headquarters, IPN reports.
Guțul did not make any statements to the press before or after the session.
In a message posted the day before on the Bashkan’s social media pages, she pleads not guilty and mentions that her detention at the airport was illegal, and that the new case against her has been fabricated.
The prosecutor in the case told the press that the arrest was requested because there are risks of evading the criminal investigation body, as well as risks of interfering with the investigation and the administration of evidence.
The Bashkan’s lawyer, Sergiu Moraru, stated that Evghenia Guțul has not committed any violation. “Any person who has participated in an electoral campaign does not know whether someone made a donation or not, because they are not responsible for the accumulation of these donations or their reporting to the CEC,” the defender said. In his opinion, the accusations against her are political.
During the court session, several people, supporters of the Bashkan, organized a protest in front of the Ciocana courthouse.
