The German government has adopted a cautious stance regarding the outcome of separate discussions held over the weekend by US President Donald Trump with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We welcome President Trump’s commitment to pursue a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine that maintains Ukrainian sovereignty and European security,” said the spokesperson for the German government.
However, the spokesperson for the German executive added that it is up to Moscow to end the war and that there is a certain discrepancy between what Russian President Vladimir Putin seems to have said and what “transpired in attacks on Ukraine during the Christmas period,” Agerpres reports.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski met with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, at his Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, after the US president had a phone conversation with the Kremlin leader.
The meeting between Volodimir Zelenski and Donald Trump ended late Sunday evening without any significant achievements being recorded, even though both leaders boasted about progress in the process of agreeing on a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
