The German government responded firmly on Tuesday, January 6, to the statements of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who suggested a hypothetical scenario involving the kidnapping of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, following the Maduro model. Berlin considers the statements unacceptable, but conveys that it sees no reason to intensify security measures following these statements, according to Kyiv Post.
Everything started from a question addressed to Medvedev by the state agency TASS, which provoked him to comment on whether he could imagine a “special operation” against the leader of Germany.
Dmitry Medvedev, currently the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, responded that, in the context of recent events in Venezuela, such actions could be “perfectly imaginable” against other heads of state, including Merz.
Subsequently, in a separate statement, Medvedev amplified the rhetoric, referring to a possible kidnapping of the chancellor – to whom he used derogatory terms – and suggesting that such a scenario would have a “degree of realism“.
“The kidnapping of the same neo-Nazi Merz could be a major turnaround in this carnival series. Nothing can surprise us here anymore. There is a grain of realism in such a scenario. There are reasons to prosecute him even in Germany. So, it won’t be a sin. Especially since the bourgeois suffer without reason”, he said.
The deputy spokesperson of the German government, Sebastian Hille, categorically condemned the statements of the Russian official, labeling them as unacceptable threats. He emphasized, however, that the German authorities do not consider it necessary to supplement the protection device of the chancellor, stating that the current measures are adequate to the level of risk. Merz, Hille added, benefits from solid and reliable protection.
