The United States Administration announced on Thursday economic sanctions against several Iranian security officials, accused of coordinating the repression of protests in the country, reports AFP.
“Iranian leaders responded brutally, with acts of violence, to peaceful protests, from mass killings on the streets to attacks on injured victims and hospitals”, denounced the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, in a video message, according to foreign agencies, quoted by Agerpres.
As a response, the Treasury Department imposes a new round of economic sanctions targeting Iranian interests.
Among those targeted is Ali Larijani, who leads Iran’s highest security body as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
“He coordinates the response to protests on behalf of Iran’s supreme leader and publicly called on Iranian security forces to use force to suppress peaceful protesters,” the ministry wrote about Ali Larijani, in a statement.
“Demonstrate for a noble cause”
Four security officials operating at the regional level in Iran are also sanctioned.
“Our message to the Iranian people is clear: your demands are legitimate. Demonstrate for a noble cause. Our message to the Iranian leadership is just as clear,” Minister Bessent declared in a video.
