Voices of criticism are increasingly heard within the Republican Party against Donald Trump’s aggressive campaign aimed at taking control of Greenland. According to the Financial Times, Congress may try to limit the president’s territorial ambitions.

The most vocal are the legislators who do not intend to run again in November. Among them, Don Bacon, a member of the House of Representatives from Nebraska, told a local newspaper that Trump’s approach to Greenland is “a total absurdity”. He stated that an invasion of the island would mean “the end of his presidency”, as it would constitute a crime worthy of impeachment. In an interview with CNN, Bacon argued that the majority of Republicans in Congress, even if they do not say it publicly, are prepared to block any potential military action: “Most know it is immoral and wrong, and we will act against it”.

Senator Thom Tillis, who also will not run for another term, announced on Tuesday that he is making efforts for a “de-escalation” around Greenland. He urged Trump not to alarm the financial markets in his Wednesday speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Several Republicans who are keeping their seats in Congress have stated that in the coming weeks they expect a resolution on military powers to be adopted, which would prohibit the president from sending troops to NATO member countries, including Greenland, without the approval of Congress, writes the FT further.
