Russia and Ukraine have made significant strides in recent days towards arranging a direct discussion between the Kremlin leader, Vladimir Putin, and the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, for negotiations aimed at concluding a peace agreement in Ukraine, American officials told Axios, reports The Moscow Times. The announcement was made following the meeting held recently in Abu Dhabi, mediated by the Americans, between representatives from Moscow and Kiev.
“We are very close to a meeting between Putin and Zelensky,” an anonymous member of the American delegation involved in the negotiations told Axios.
Thus, neither the Russian delegation nor the Ukrainian one avoided the sensitive topics on the discussion agenda. The Ukrainians and Russians thus discussed in Abu Dhabi about the control of the territory of the Donbas region, the management of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, as well as steps for de-escalation of the situation to ensure that, once ended, this war will not be resumed.
The American official added that if the next round of trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for February 1, brings further progress, Russia and Ukraine could organize direct meetings, in Moscow or Kiev.
