Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed on Wednesday the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU, during their meeting in Berlin.

The Romanian Prime Minister stated, in a conference held jointly with Friedrich Merz, that “for Romania, the Republic of Moldova is a strategic priority”, and “the stability of Chisinau and its European path matter for the entire region”.

“The role of the European Union is essential, and opening the accession negotiations as soon as possible would be an important signal for citizens and for regional security”, said Ilie Bolojan.

He emphasized that “if the negotiations for accession were to open, it would be the greatest gain for Moldova” and thanked Mertz for his presence in Chisinau, at the rally during the electoral campaign for the 2025 parliamentary elections.

In turn, Friedrich Merz stated: “We want to keep Moldova’s path to Europe open. We cannot disappoint the Moldovan citizens who desire the European path”.

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated during her visit to Warsaw that for her country, accession to the EU represents the clearest guarantee of security.
