The European Parliament announced on Wednesday that it is resuming the examination of the EU’s trade agreement with the US, after Donald Trump backed down on his statements about Greenland, AFP and Reuters report.
MEPs are ready to “move forward quickly”, “provided that the US respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Union and its member states”, declared the Social Democrat Bernd Lange, chairman of the International Trade Committee (INTA) of the EP, Agerpres reports.
The community legislature froze the examination of this agreement two weeks ago, in protest against the threats of the American president regarding Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory.
Resuming work on the agreement “is not a blank check”, but “a signal of a general will to engage in dialogue”, emphasized Bernd Lange, a German MEP.
MEPs have agreed to add to the text the possibility of suspending “the application of the agreement at any time if the interests, security or territorial integrity of Europe are threatened”.
