Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Saturday that the European Union (EU) represents a greater threat to Hungary than Russia, accusing Brussels of trying to undermine his government by supporting the opposition, according to dw.com.
Orban, who has been Prime Minister since 2010, is facing his biggest internal challenge in recent years, as his nationalist Fidesz party has been trailing the conservative Tisza party in most pre-election polls for the April elections.
Orban, who has long criticized European military aid to Ukraine in the context of Russia’s invasion, attacked the EU in a speech addressed to his supporters.
“We must get used to the idea that those who love freedom should not fear the East, but Brussels,” said the Prime Minister.“Fear of Putin is primitive and unserious. Brussels, however, is a tangible reality and a source of imminent danger,” he said. “This is the bitter truth and we will not tolerate it,” Orban added.
On Saturday, Orban also accused the EU of supporting his main opponent, the leader of the Tisza party, Peter Magyar.
