Chris Wright, the United States Secretary for Energy, reiterated on Thursday, February 19, the threat that his country will abandon the International Energy Agency (IEA) if it does not change its position which, he believes, is favorable to clean energies.

“If the IEA is not able to return to its initial mission, we will become former members of the IEA, but we will work to prevent this from happening”, Wright stated, in a press conference organized on the occasion of the ministerial meeting of this institution based in Paris, according to EFE, quoted by Agerpres.

Chris Wright avoided commenting on whether Fatih Birol, the current director of the IEA, starting from 2015, should remain in office and once again harshly criticized the energy policy of European countries.

“We are very determined not to have to leave the agency”

The Secretary for Energy admitted that if Washington withdraws from the IEA, “there will always be a risk” that China could take advantage of this vacant spot to enter the organization.

“We are very determined not to have to leave the agency”, the American official insisted.

    Chris Wright added:

“You can’t, at the same time, represent that agenda regarding energy security and human progress and, at the same time, have a parallel mission which consists in advocating for the reduction of access to energy, increasing its price and telling the 7 billion people that they cannot live like all those who are in this room”, Wright said.
