The Kremlin was forced to pay damages of up to 15,000 euros to several protesters who were fined or arrested after protests in Tiraspol, announces promo-LEX. Moscow lost in the Jucoveț and others against the Republic of Moldova and Russia case.

The six claimants, Maria Jucoveț, Alexandr Samonii, Alexander Nevskiy, Nadezhda Bondarenko, Vera Kaput, and Antonina Samonii protested in June 2018 in Tiraspol, criticizing the separatist administration. The demonstration was peaceful, most of the participants were retirees and they asked for support in the social field.

The day after the event, law enforcement officers drew up contravention files. Maria Jucoveț was sentenced to 6 days of administrative arrest, Alexander Nevskiy – to 10 days, Alexandr Samonii – to 14 days of arrest, and Nadezhda Bondarenko, Vera Kaput, and Antonina Samonii were fined administrative fines of 368 Transnistrian rubles each, equivalent to about 19.50 euros at that time.

According to Promo-LEX, the arrested persons were held in the temporary detention isolator of the Tiraspol militia, in conditions that the ECHR qualified as incompatible with the standards of the Convention on Human Rights. This refers to insufficient space, unsanitary conditions, lack of light, ventilation, sanitary facilities, and also the infestation of rooms with parasites.

The Russian Federation was forced to pay damages of 15,000 euros to each of the claimants who served arrest sentences and 9000 euros to each of the fined claimants. Another 4800 euros must be paid by Russia as court costs.
