US President, Donald Trump, stated on Tuesday that he wants to “sever all trade relations” with Spain, after accusing Madrid of blocking US access to Spanish military bases. At a press conference alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the US President affirmed that he had instructed the Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, to “cease” relations with Spain, amidst the escalating conflict with Iran.

“Spain has behaved terribly. We will sever all trade relations with Spain. We don’t want to have anything to do with Spain,” Trump said.

Spain has publicly declared that it will not allow the use of Rota and Moron bases for attacks on Iran, arguing that “any activity must fit within existing agreements and international law”.

The socialist Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, explicitly condemned the “unilateral military action” of the US and Israel against Iran, warning that this contributes to “a more hostile and uncertain international order,” writes The Guardian.

The reproaches were reinforced by his government’s refusal to allow the US to use the bases in Rota and Morón for the continuation of attacks against Iran.
