An Iranian drone that attacked the British air base RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was reportedly equipped with Russian military technology, according to information surfaced in the international press. The discovery fuels suspicions of a possible closer military collaboration between Russia and Iran.

The attack took place on Sunday, March 1, when RAF Akrotiri base was targeted by a drone launched from Lebanon. According to preliminary data, the device would have been equipped with a Russian-made Kometa-B navigation system, a technology previously identified in drones intercepted by Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense in December.

The drone fragments were recovered by British military intelligence services and sent to a laboratory in the UK for further analysis, according to the publication The Times. If the information is confirmed, it would be the first evidence that Russian military equipment is used in the current conflict involving Iran.

Despite these suspicions, US President Donald Trump stated that he received “no indication” that Russia would support Iran. “If they do, they’re not doing it very well, because Iran is not doing very well,” he said.

    Accusations of Russia’s Support

Sources quoted by the American press suggest that Moscow would provide Iran with information about the positions of American military assets in the Middle East, including warships and aircraft.

Three officials familiar with the situation stated that the support would have started with the outbreak of the conflict. One of them told The Washington Post that the alleged involvement of Russia represents “a rather extensive effort” to help Tehran identify American targets in the region.

Russia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrei Kelin, told Sky News that Moscow “is not neutral” in the conflict and that its position is “favorable to Iran”.

In turn, the head of the British army’s General Staff, Sir Richard Knighton, stated that he has “no doubt” that Russia has provided information to Iran and confirmed that the attack on RAF Akrotiri base was launched from Lebanon by an “Iran-aligned group”.
