As the war continues and peace negotiations stagnate, the tone of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is becoming increasingly harsh. In recent weeks, the leader in Kiev has publicly expressed his frustration with both adversaries and Western partners on whom Ukraine depends for military, financial, and diplomatic support, writes politico.eu.

Zelensky has criticized European leaders for what he considers to be a too slow pace of aid to Kiev, has engaged in a war of words with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and has questioned the approach of US President Donald Trump towards the war.

According to people close to the Ukrainian president, this change in tone reflects the increasing pressure felt in Kiev. Peace negotiations are progressing slowly, and international financial support remains uncertain. However, some warn that harsher rhetoric risks straining relations with the same partners Ukraine needs.

A former foreign policy adviser to Zelensky, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the accumulated frustration is beginning to influence the way the president communicates publicly.

“This frustration fuels harsher rhetoric,” he said, adding that the situation risks becoming “a vicious circle”.

    Negotiation Pressure

The change in tone is also linked to the pressure exerted on Kiev in the peace negotiations, says opposition Ukrainian MP Mikola Kniazhitsky.

According to him, Zelensky is aware that he cannot accept the Kremlin’s demands to give up the eastern regions of Ukraine. For this reason, his messages to Western leaders have become more direct.

At the same time, the president is trying to send a firm signal domestically. His statements aim to emotionally influence the partners involved in negotiations, as well as to strengthen his internal image as a determined defender of Ukraine’s national interests.
