Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on Wednesday that it is unjust for citizens around the world to bear the cost of what he called the illegal actions of the United States and Israel in Iran, warning that war causes severe economic damage globally.
“Every bomb that falls in the Middle East hits the wallets of our families”, Sanchez told lawmakers in a session where he presented the reasons for his government’s strong opposition to war, a position later adopted by other European leaders, according to Reuters.
The figure of 100 billion euros refers to the decrease in the total market capitalization of the top companies in Spain’s IBEX index since the outbreak of the conflict on February 28th.
Parliament is expected to vote on Thursday on measures proposed by the cabinet last week to help citizens cope with the economic effects, including reducing fuel and electricity taxes and providing subsidies for sectors most exposed to rising energy prices.
