Russia is in the midst of a vast but slow effort to “break its internet” from the rest of the world, say activists and experts cited by The Guardian. They say this move will have significant consequences for the millions of people who are gradually being separated from the rest of the online world.

Unlike this year’s internet “feathers” in Iran, the blackout in Russia is kept as “secret” as possible by the Putin regime – a very gradual and very opaque effort.

It is defined by a gradual escalation of internet penalties across the breadth and length of Russian provinces and cities, by an increasing number of restrictions on certain types of online traffic, restrictions on Telegram, the essential messaging application for communications and daily life in Russia.

“We are talking about a big step backwards. It takes the Russians a hundred years into the past. They might as well return to letters on paper, to telegraph, and to horse transportation soon,” says the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, in a Twitter post about the phenomenon that has been happening in Russia recently.
