The Trump administration insists that Ukraine must cede the extended region of Donbas to the aggressor state in order to “end the war,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, quoted by Axios.
“President Trump and his team want to end the war. But why should we pay for it? We are not the aggressors. They see no other way to stop Putin than to withdraw Ukrainian troops from our territory,” Zelensky said in an interview given to Axios. He mentioned that such a decision would undermine Ukraine’s security, but Trump does not understand this.
In the meantime, the most recent discussions of the Ukrainian delegation with the American presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and the American president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, which took place in Miami between March 21-22, ended in failure, Zelenski acknowledged. He added that he fears that, after the end of the war against Iran, Trump will resume pressure on Ukraine to accept territorial concessions in favor of the Russian aggressor.
Previously, Zelenski stated in an interview with Reuters that the US ties security guarantees for Ukraine to the withdrawal of troops from the Donbas region. “Unfortunately, in my opinion, President Trump still chooses a strategy of exerting greater pressure on the Ukrainian side,” said Zelenski. However, the Secretary of the State Department, Marco Rubio, called this a “lie”.
