The VSquare portal has published new recordings of the discussions held by the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, which reveal how the two have devised a plan to block Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

The leaders of the Union convened in December 2023 to initiate accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, but faced fierce opposition from Hungary.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has threatened to block the decision.

In fact, he was aiming to use this opportunity to secure the release of tens of billions of euros for Hungary.

Brussels had blocked these funds due to the rule of law violations by the government in Budapest.

At the event on December 14, the Hungarian Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister Peter Szijjarto. At one point, he left the meeting room to report to the Russian Minister, Sergei Lavrov.

“Peter, how are you doing?“, Lavrov greeted his Hungarian counterpart.

He explained to him how the negotiations are going and what Hungary’s plan is.

“Well, excellent. Sometimes, direct blackmail, exercised with goodwill, is the best option,” the Russian minister reacted.

The Budapest plan did not work out

Hungary’s plan did not work. The German Chancellor invited Viktor Orban for a coffee, who had left the room during the vote.

Thus, the representatives of the other 26 states unanimously adopted the decision to open the accession process with the two states.

The meeting documents record that Hungary abstained.
