The interim Bulgarian government warned on Wednesday that it is aware of the existence of a huge amount of counterfeit euro banknotes intended for the purchase of votes in the early parliamentary elections taking place on Sunday, the eighth such election in the last five years, reports EFE agency, quoted by Agerpres.

Interim Prime Minister Andrei Gurov stated that the Ministry of Interior is handling these reports, which announced on Tuesday that it has confiscated one million euros, money intended for buying votes in favor of a certain party, which he did not specify. An investigation is underway to determine if any of the confiscated banknotes are counterfeit.

On Wednesday morning, the Bulgarian police announced that they had confiscated counterfeit banknotes totaling 5,000 euros and 6,000 pounds sterling. Prime Minister Giurov accused the authors of this scheme, whom he did not specify, of trying to distort the Bulgarian citizens’ vote through deception, and asked the latter to collaborate in order to thwart such attempts at electoral manipulation.

In turn, Deputy Interior Minister Ivan Anchev announced that 1,743 complaints were received regarding attempts to buy votes, almost four times more than in the early elections of 2024.
