The Kremlin confirmed on Thursday a two-day ceasefire in the War in Ukraine, starting from midnight on Thursday to Friday, on the occasion of celebrating the Soviet victory in 1945 against Nazi Germany.

“Yes, we are talking about May 8 and 9,” responded the spokesperson for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, when asked about this at a press briefing.

The Ministry of Defense in Moscow has announced the establishment of a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict with Ukraine, valid on the 8th and 9th of May 2026, on the occasion of marking Victory Day in the Second World War.

According to the statement sent via the messaging application MAX, supported by the Russian state, the decision belongs to President Vladimir Putin, the supreme commander of the armed forces of the Russian Federation. Moscow maintains that the temporary cessation of hostilities is related to the ceremonies dedicated to the victory over Nazi Germany, including the military parade organized in Red Square.

Instead, Russia has rejected the ceasefire proposed by Kiev.

“Russia’s choice represents a clear rejection of a ceasefire and saving lives,” said Volodimri Zelensky, the president of Ukraine.
