Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for an official state visit to China, at the invitation of Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The visit takes place from May 19-20 and represents the 25th trip of Vladimir Putin to China, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The reception of Vladimir Putin was a real event, hundreds of people waving the Russian flag and chanting in the air, while Putin was welcomed by Chinese officials.

During the meeting, the two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations, cooperation in various fields, as well as international and regional issues of common interest, according to China Daily.

This year marks two important moments in the relationship between the two states: 30 years since the establishment of the strategic coordination partnership between China and Russia, and 25 years since the signing of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.

Chinese authorities maintain that this visit offers a new opportunity to strengthen relations between the two powers.

“Both sides will take this opportunity to continue deepening and strengthening the relations between China and Russia, with the aim of bringing more stability and positive energy to the world“, declared a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The aim of Vladimir Putin’s visit to China: what does the Russian leader want to achieve in the discussions in Beijing

Thus, the main objective of the visit is to strengthen relations with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and to obtain concrete commitments in essential areas such as energy, trade, and geopolitical cooperation.

The visit of the Kremlin leader comes shortly after the official trip to China by the American President Donald Trump, a context in which Moscow is trying to reaffirm its status as Beijing’s privileged strategic partner.

International analysts assert that Vladimir Putin pursues three major objectives in the meeting with Xi Jinping: strengthening China’s diplomatic support in the context of the war in Ukraine, accelerating energy cooperation, and expanding trade relations.
