To continue the war against Ukraine, the Russian leadership may be forced to resort to unpopular measures, including a new mobilization, closing of borders, limitation of civil liberties gained after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the transition to a Soviet-style command economy. This forecast appears in the report “The Future Crisis of Russia’s Political Economy”, prepared by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
According to the report, although Russia is waging the most extensive war in Europe in nearly 100 years, it has not yet achieved a full mobilization of society and the economy – a situation considered unusual both for the history of Russia and for the world.
IISS experts warn that all states involved in the Second World War mobilized soldiers for the front. Even the United States, during the Vietnam War, compulsorily recruited about 1.7 million people, of which 38% were sent to the front.
