The war of statements between Washington and Tehran reaches a new critical peak, just as a diplomatic agreement seems closer than ever. Shortly after American President Donald Trump suggested that a historic consensus with Iran is imminent, the propaganda machines of the Islamic Republic reacted aggressively, publicly contesting both the nature of the agreement and the key provisions leaked to the press.

Beyond the optimism displayed by the White House, the reality on the ground indicates a deep chasm between the terms accepted by the two sides. The stakes are huge: control of global energy routes and the future of the Iranian nuclear dossier, all against the backdrop of a turbulent power transition in Tehran, reports CNN.

The Battle for the Strait of Hormuz: “Open” or under Iranian control?

The sharpest divergence concerns the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime point that Iran has de facto blocked since the outbreak of hostilities. Although Donald Trump assured on the Truth Social platform that the strait “will be open”, the semi-official Iranian agency Fars categorically rejected the idea of returning to the pre-war status quo.

Tehran sends a clear signal: accepting the resumption of commercial traffic does not mean giving up its sovereign claims over this strategic channel.

“Based on the latest project text analyzed, if an agreement is reached, the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iran’s management”, Fars reported. “The fact that Iran has agreed for the number of transiting ships to return to pre-war levels does not mean, in any case, a return to the concept of free movement under previous conditions.”

Both sides are now trying to convince their own public that they have achieved a victory at the negotiating table.

While the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on an official visit to New Delhi, strongly condemned Iran’s attitude – reminding that Ormuz is an international waterway, and the threat to commercial ships blatantly violates international law – both sides are now trying to convince their own public that they have achieved a victory at the negotiation table.
