For May 31, a protest action against the local administration is announced in the center of Tiraspol. The mobilization of participants mainly takes place through an anonymous Viber channel, one of the most influential in the Transnistrian region.
In the political and media environment of the region, the channel is associated with Alexandr Socolan, state the disinfo.md sources from the region. Socolan is a former collaborator of the security structures of the Transnistrian customs committee and a person close to the former leader of the region, Evgheni Șevciuk, who currently resides in the Russian Federation.
Beyond the real discontent existing in society, questions arise regarding the political objectives of mobilization and the beneficiaries of a potential escalation. It is clear that any incident or confrontation that occurs during the protest could be used later in an informational campaign to attribute responsibility to the constitutional authorities in Chisinau.
Such a scenario would not be new to the Kremlin. In the past, various local crises were accompanied by narratives about alleged attempts at external destabilization, later used to justify political or geopolitical positions.
In the case of the Transnistrian region, the main risk is not the protest itself, but the possibility that it could be instrumentalized. If events degenerate, there is a likelihood that certain political voices from Moscow may invoke the need to “protect Russian citizens” or the existence of threats to the region’s stability.
