Nicolai Ormanji’s resignation from the position of interim president of the Gagauzia People’s Assembly could not be accepted at the June 10th meeting. Although there was a quorum at the beginning of the meeting, when the project was debated, several local elected officials left the room in a huff.

Vice President Gheorghe Leiciu, who presided over the meeting and was to assume the duties of Nicolai Ormanji, put the proposal to acknowledge the resignation to vote twice. The meeting was adjourned after only five members of the Popular Assembly expressed their choice.

According to the Regulation of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, in the event of the absence or inability of the president to perform his duties, one of the vice-presidents assumes the leadership duties based on a written order from the president, for the entire period of absence, but no more than 45 calendar days.

The Vice-Presidents also coordinate the activities of the standing committees of the Assembly and resolve other internal matters of the institution, in accordance with the Regulations and the distribution of responsibilities among the Vice-Presidents.

Nicolai Ormanji has resigned from his position as interim president of the People’s Assembly, after local elected officials failed to vote on a project that was supposed to end the electoral deadlock in the region. The document was approved jointly with the administration from Chisinau and criticized by politicians from Gagauzia, associated with Ilan Șor.
