If he comes to the head of the government, observers quoted by the British press and international agencies have warned, Burnham will take over a country with a suffering economy, with debts and limited financial action space, and an electorate dissatisfied with current policies, including those regarding migration, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the uncertainty in the Middle East, and an increasingly complicated relationship with the USA

The popular Labour figure Andy Burnham, former mayor of Greater Manchester, is the leading favorite to take over the role of Prime Minister of Great Britain, following the resignation announced on Monday by the current head of government, Keir Starmer.

A potential rival, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting, announced on Monday that he will not enter a power struggle with Burnham and will support him for the head of the government.

Burnham was already positioning himself as a strong challenger to Starmer and made the decisive move towards taking over the prime minister’s position by winning a parliamentary mandate in last week’s by-election in Makerfield, northwest England.

With last Thursday’s victory, Burnham not only fulfilled a necessary condition for the position of Prime Minister – holding a deputy mandate – but also proved that he can defeat the strongest party in current polls, Nigel Farrage’s Reform UK.

The hardest is yet to come.

Burnham takes over a country with a suffering economy, burdened with debt and limited financial maneuverability, with an electorate dissatisfied with current policies, including those regarding migration, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the uncertainty in the Middle East, and an increasingly complicated relationship with the USA.
