In the power circles of Moscow, there is growing concern that President Vladimir Putin might respond with a new military escalation following the Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory, reports The Washington Post.
According to the publication, the series of attacks, which targeted nine of the largest ten refineries in Russia, as well as defense industry enterprises in the Voronezh, Volgograd, and Tula regions, are fueling the fears of Russian officials. At the same time, they are trying to find solutions to keep the economy and budget afloat, as the budget deficit exceeded 6 trillion rubles in the first five months of the year.
“We do not have enough anti-aircraft defense systems to protect the infrastructure. No one knows how production can be rapidly increased. It’s a terrifying situation that Putin and his inner circle did not anticipate. They were not prepared for a prolonged war, nor for a drone war,” a businessman from Moscow told The Washington Post.
