Russian authorities have begun installing public telephones in the annexed cities of Crimea, so that residents can call emergency services during power outages and repeated interruptions of mobile networks.

The first devices were installed in the city of Djankoi, where mobile communications are available according to a strict schedule – twice a day, for four hours each time. According to local authorities, the phones allow free calls to the unique emergency number 112, firefighters, police, ambulance, and gas service, and they operate even in the absence of electricity or mobile phone network.

A similar phone was also installed in Evpatoria.

In recent weeks, several cities in Crimea have frequently been left without electricity and water, following Ukrainian attacks on power substations. The head of the administration installed by Russia in the peninsula, Sergei Aksionov, previously stated that it is impossible to establish a predictable power supply schedule and announced the reduction of street lighting and the distribution of generators in localities affected by prolonged power outages.
