The Azerbaijani dictator, Ilham Aliev, alleges that several high-ranking German and Russian officials had a meeting in Baku in July to discuss how to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine, and that the Azerbaijani government was not informed about this meeting, reports Bloomberg, as relayed by Ukrainska Pravda.
“Our territory was used for such a meeting without our knowledge,” Aliev pointed out on Tuesday in Berlin, at a joint press conference with Friedrich Merz.
“I cannot comment on the details, because we were not present at the meeting. However, the flight data allows me to affirm that indeed a secret meeting took place in Baku,” Aliev declared. He says that the alleged meeting of German officials with the Russians took place between July 12-14.
He added that, if the meeting was aimed at finding solutions to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, then Azerbaijan can only “welcome” this.
Friedrich Merz denied his government’s involvement in these contacts.
“I know nothing about such a meeting,” he said.
