Sergey Lavrov implies that Vladimir Putin is a deity. The Russian Foreign Minister said in an interview that former President Boris Yeltsin “handed over power to the only person who could preserve Russia”.
The Russian official believes that Putin’s rise to power was a “historic turn,” according to Antena3. In his opinion, those events meant that the country was “marked by God.”
“The fact that Boris Nikolaevich Yeltsin found the courage to hand over power early and the fact that he handed over power to the only person at that time who could preserve Russia – this is a historical turning point in events that signifies that Russia is marked by God. Everything in the country was on the brink of the abyss. And when things get tough, we receive help from above,” Lavrov said.
Patriarch Kirill also stated in 2025 that Russians should thank God for Putin and for the “prosperous times”.
In turn, the Russian leader previously stated that Russia is “directly governed by God”.
Previously, icons with Putin’s image were distributed to soldiers. The images of him and the former Minister of Defense were painted on the mosaics of the Armed Forces Cathedral.
