Change in Russia: Celebrities who promoted the war in Ukraine are now calling for peace or accusing the authorities of “not telling the truth”

In 2022, the well-known Russian singer Slava (Anastasia Slanevskaia) called artists who were leaving Russia because of the war “cowards” and declared her support for Putin. Now, she is appealing to “all artists, bloggers, and people in the media” to openly demand “the cessation of the conflict”.

    • Glory is not the only case.
    • And other influencers are changing their discourse against the backdrop of increasingly powerful blows dealt by Ukraine deep within Russia.
    • A well-known actor has sent a direct message to Putin in which he claims that those around the President of the Russian Federation “are not telling you what is really happening”.

More than four years after the launch of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, signs are appearing in the Russian public space that some of the celebrities who openly supported the Kremlin are beginning to change their tone.

The cases are still few and do not represent an explicit condemnation of the war or of President Vladimir Putin’s actions, yet they strongly contrast with the messages that the same individuals promoted in the early years of the conflict.

The change in discourse comes in a context where Ukrainian attacks on Russian Federation territory have become increasingly frequent, and the effects of the war are felt more and more strongly by the population thousands of kilometers away from the front line. In particular, it is about the attacks on Wildberries warehouses, the largest online retailer in the country (the “Russian Amazon”).
