Oil from a tanker under sanctions is leaking off the coast of Oman. Environmental experts are concerned about the impact of the accident.

This is about the ship “Caroline Bezengi”, which loaded Russian oil in the port of Novorossiisk on the Black Sea before embarking on its most recent journey, writes hotnews.ro.

The ship first reported problems on June 8, off the port of Mukalla in southern Yemen. It is not ruled out that an explosion occurred on board.

A satellite image from July 28 shows a dark oil stain in the water, near the ship, as well as lighter colored spots, located north of al-Qibliyyah island, which is close to the coast of Oman and is part of a protected marine area.

The monsoon season in the area, which usually peaks in July and August, can bring severe weather conditions that could rapidly spread the oil, experts claim.

The ship is under the sanctions of the European Union and the United Kingdom, for the alleged involvement in the transport of Russian fuels.

The owner of this, registered in the maritime transport databases as Rentoor Shipmanagement, based in Shanghai, could not be contacted.

Russia uses old, often poorly maintained, oil tankers for the “ghost fleet” to avoid Western sanctions on crude oil exports. It is not clear whether the damage caused by the explosion on board the ship was due to a possible military attack.
