The Kremlin could launch a new wave of mobilization after the “elections” in September for the State Duma, to send thousands of new soldiers to the front line in Ukraine, reports The Wall Street Journal, quoted by The Moscow Times.

According to WSJ sources, Moscow authorities are considering this scenario due to the low influx of contract soldiers, which hinders President Vladimir Putin’s plans to occupy the entire Donbas.

The American daily notes that the new mobilization could include Russians with minimal training or those who do not wish to fight at all, while the first wave in September 2022 called up reservists and people with military experience.

Ruslan Puhov, the director of the Center for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, based in Moscow, also speaks about the possibility of a new mobilization of the Russian Armed Forces, whose advance in July amounted to only 37.85 square kilometers.

According to this, if Putin decides to persist in his demands for full occupation of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, “he might have no other option but to declare mobilization.” The political risks of such a decision could outweigh the military benefits on the front line, as some Russians have declared their willingness to resist mobilization, according to WSJ.

“As soon as they give me a weapon, I will shoot those who mobilized me,” declared Dmitri Rogin, a 53-year-old Russian reserve officer, to the American newspaper.
