A proposal that until recently was considered a political eccentricity has begun to gain visibility in the United States. The idea is supported by public figures ranging from the pastor of the American Secretary of Defense to ultraconservative influencers and leaders of online men’s communities, reports El Pais.
The theologian and pastor Doug Wilson has been propagating his far-right vision since the 1970s. He is the co-founder of his own Christian denomination, “The Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches”, which includes approximately 170 congregations across the country. Additionally, he leads an empire of ultraconservative ideas that encompasses a small university, a school offering education from kindergarten to high school, a streaming service, and a publishing house. He runs everything from the city of Moscow, Idaho, located in one of the most conservative states of the Union.
Although religion is a profitable industry in the USA and there are numerous similar preachers, few can boast that they are among the supporters of the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, who invited Wilson to the Pentagon to deliver a sermon.
The call for the abolition of the Nineteenth Amendment
This proximity to the new power circles in Washington has drawn attention to the ideas of a religious leader who openly advocates for a theocracy based on white Christian nationalism. In particular, attention has been focused on his proposal to repeal the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which guaranteed women the right to vote in 1920, writes El Pais.
Wilson proposes replacing this system with that of his own congregation, where the vote is exercised “at the household level”. The aim, he argues, is to combat the “cancer of individualism”.
