Iran and Oman have reached an agreement on the geographical coordinates of a navigation route through the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the foreign ministry in Tehran, Esmail Baghaei.
A joint statement is to follow, “if certain third parties do not interfere,” added the representative of the Iranian administration, writes Agerpres. According to him, the agreement itself will not guarantee the security of the maritime route.
The agreement stipulates that Tehran will maintain control over the ships entering the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a high-ranking Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters agency.
Although it seemingly represents a step towards accepting Iran’s claims and one of the biggest concessions so far, sources from the Western press have dismissed the assertions of the American president Donald Trump that the reopening of the strait is imminent, stating that important details still need to be agreed upon.
