Lithuania has discovered a new tunnel, the third recently identified, through which migrants were to be illegally introduced into this country from Belarus, announced the authorities in Vilnius on Wednesday, according to the DPA agency, quoted by Agerpres.
This secret tunnel, unfinished and without an exit on the Lithuanian side of the border, was dug under the border fence at a depth of approximately 1.5 meters and reinforced with tree trunks and planks. Lithuanian border police discovered it with the help of electronic equipment.
Lithuania has often accused Belarus, a Russian ally, of organizing migrant trafficking as a hybrid warfare tactic, the Lithuanian authorities’ response being the erection of a fence at the Belarusian border.
Another two tunnels have already been discovered under the border between Belarus and Lithuania in recent weeks.
