An artificial island, built by the Chinese in the South China Sea, has sparked controversy. Although the authorities in Beijing claim it will be used for civilian purposes, critics believe it will have a military purpose.
China has completed the first phase of the construction of the Antelope Reef in the Paracel archipelago, causing tensions for this reason, reports Mediafax. The area could be used by Chinese aircraft and ships, including for a potential attack on Taiwan.
Construction work on the buildings began in the southeast corner of the island, including a platform for helicopters. There is also a straight coastline area that could become a runway for planes.
The Ministry of Defense in China has not commented on the information, but previously acknowledged that it intends to create a military base, without providing further details. On the other hand, the state press in Beijing wrote that Antelope will be used for civilian purposes, for example to forecast the weather or conduct scientific research.
