German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Tuesday, August 25, that the country is “under threat,” after a third drone was found near the Leipzig airport.
“The drone attack in Leipzig, among others, shows that we are also facing very real threats. Germany has increasingly come under the attention of attackers who use hybrid methods”, Merz declared before the German government meeting in Neuhardenberg, according to Politico.
In early August, German authorities discovered a drone on the platform of Leipzig/Halle Airport. The device was attached to an unknown substance, equipped with a detonator, and investigators believed it could be an explosive device.
As a result of the device’s presence at the airport, air traffic was immediately suspended, and flights were redirected. The American intelligence services, quoted by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) say that the drone probably belongs to Russia.
However, the German authorities have not yet determined who launched the alleged attack.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has labeled the incident as a possible “hybrid attack scenario”, in the context where suspicious drones have previously disrupted the activity of some European airports.
Two days after the incident, several drones were detected over a German military base in Mechernich.
