Russia is said to have recruited at least 857 Moldovans to fight in Ukraine. The data was presented by the Ukrainian military intelligence service, referring to the project “Хочу жить” (Eng. trans.: I want to live), supported by the Ministry of Defense in Kiev.
“‘I want to live’ represents a center that receives requests from Russian soldiers who want to surrender to Ukrainian authorities,” writes realitatea.md. Stories of people who have ended up on the front lines and decided to accept imprisonment rather than fight are shared on social media pages.
According to the statistics held by the project representatives, 81 Moldovan citizens have died in the war in Ukraine, and 8 have become prisoners.
The respective information has not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova.
