Approximately 1.7 million voters from Saxony-Anhalt are called to the polls on Sunday, September 6, in an election closely watched throughout Germany. The vote in this eastern state is the first in a series of three regional elections that could influence the German political balance.
On September 20, the elections in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and Berlin are due. In all three polls, the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is credited with significant scores. In Saxony-Anhalt, however, the party has the chance to make an unprecedented step: to take control over a regional government.
“I have already won”
The leader of the Alternative for Germany in Saxony-Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund, aged 36, did not hide his confidence in victory.
At an electoral event organized on Friday, September 4, in Magdeburg, Siegmund told his supporters that his party has already won, at least politically.
“We have already written a page of history. We have found each other again and learned to love our country anew”, he said in front of his supporters, according to reports about the event.
The speech took place against the backdrop of a heavy rain, which caused some of the participants to leave the event.
For AfD, however, the stakes are much higher than winning a single land.
