Germany aims to build a “Cyberdome”, a “digital” shield that will use a network of sensors and AI to protect against cyber attacks and sabotage, reports Bild, as relayed by Euronews.
Alexander Dobrindt, the German Minister of the Interior, stated that Russian hybrid attacks have become a “daily reality” and that they will most likely increase, but he said that there are ways in which the country can defend itself.
The plan for the implementation of the “Cyberdome” will also involve the expansion of the German police’s mobile defense capabilities with drones, with “rapidly mobilizable units” based in key cities such as Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, to protect the airspace above major transport centers.
The use of AI technology, such as facial recognition, would also be intensified to help identify potential attackers, while companies would be granted the right to detect drones and to “actively defend against them,” the report further added.
The decision comes after the explosive drone incident discovered at the Leipzig airport, near some Ukrainian transport aircraft.
The device did not explode, apparently due to a detonator malfunction, and investigators suspect that a second drone collided with a nearby cargo plane. Also found was a substance analyzed to be 50 grams of hexogen, an extremely powerful military explosive.
