Transport and customs documents obtained by Politico and analyzed by Western authorities provide, according to the publication, the clearest evidence to date that a Chinese state enterprise is supplying Russia with essential materials for the production of kamikaze drones.
A delivery of 46 tons of precursors for carbon fiber would have been destined for a sanctioned Russian company, which produces components for drones used by Moscow in attacks on Ukraine. Transport and customs documents show that the Chinese company shipped 46 tons of carbon fiber-based chemicals to a subsidiary of the Russian company Rosatom, earlier this year.
The company develops essential components for the kamikaze drones that Moscow used in the attack on a shopping center in central Ukraine in August, an attack that resulted in the death of at least 16 people. The Chinese components have long been recovered from the Russian drones after the attacks on Ukraine.
Nevertheless, documents obtained from Russian sources by the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation (USCC) – a think-tank based in Kiev, close to the Ukrainian government – detail for the first time how a Chinese state enterprise would have directly exported essential components for drone manufacturing to Russia.
USCC has transmitted the documents to the governments of Great Britain and the US. These revelations “would allow the State Department [of the US] to sanction” the Chinese supplier, as they “prove” the existence of deliveries to the Rosatom subsidiary after it was sanctioned by a large part of the West, stated David Albright, founder and president of the think tank Institute for Science and International Security, based in Washington.
