The Starokazacie Customs, at the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, was attacked on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Two people have died, and another two are injured.
One of the individuals who suffered trauma is a Moldovan citizen. This person refused hospitalization and traveled within the country by car, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau.
“According to the information confirmed at this time, the two people who died in the attack are citizens of Ukraine. There are no confirmed citizens of the Republic of Moldova among the deceased. Also, a citizen of the Republic of Moldova was injured in the attack, refused hospitalization, and continued his journey by car to Chisinau. Regarding the means of transport from the Republic of Moldova that may have been damaged or destroyed in the attack, the information is being verified. We are in contact with the Ukrainian authorities and will return with confirmed data,” the Moldovan diplomats conveyed.
Maia Sandu condemned the attack and pointed out that the authorities must take measures to protect the territory of Moldova, including the country’s airspace.
“Last night, Russia once again brought terror to Ukraine. Cities and communities were attacked, the brutal war reaching our border. At the Starokazacie crossing point, on Ukrainian territory, just 1 kilometer from the Republic of Moldova, two people, whose identities have not yet been established, lost their lives in a drone attack. And yesterday, another Russian drone entered our airspace. It passed into Romania, returned, and crashed in the Rîșcani district. Even though it did not cause casualties, such a violation represents a huge risk for the lives of our people, for villages and cities, for the planes that cross our sky.”
It’s hard to believe that in the face of this reality there are still voices trying to convince Moldovans that Russia is not the aggressor or that the war near us does not concern us. To deny the danger while Russian drones and missiles sow death and put Moldova in harm’s way, and to criticize your country’s efforts to strengthen its defense system, means choosing betrayal over the safety of your own people.
“We choose to do everything in our power to defend our people. To strengthen our ability to protect our sky and borders. And to call things by their names and to stand on the side of good,” conveyed the President of Moldova.
And Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has issued a message condemning the aggression. According to him, the deceased individuals cannot yet be identified due to the burns.
