The relics of a medieval Russian leader, known for his victory over the Mongols, have been sent to the front in Ukraine to boost the morale of the soldiers, in the latest gesture by which the Russian Orthodox Church shows its support for Vladimir Putin’s war, reports Reuters.

The stone sarcophagus of the great prince Dmitri Donskoi, who died in 1389 and is revered by Russian nationalists for defeating the Golden Horde in the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, was discovered this summer during restoration works at the Archangel Michael Cathedral within the Kremlin compound.

Putin personally inspected the remains that experts have said belong to the prince and are in a remarkable state of preservation. In August, the Russian president described them as “an absolutely unique and wonderful discovery,” which he said strengthens the foundations of Russia’s history.

The Russian Orthodox Church, which supported Putin throughout the war, announced that it has sent to Donetsk a fragment of Donskoi’s right hand. Donetsk is one of the four Ukrainian regions that Putin claimed in 2022 to have annexed to Russia, a decision rejected by Kiev as an illegal seizure of territories.
