Chinese President Xi Jinping stated at the BRICS summit in New Delhi that China will take the initiative to contribute to the development and strengthening of cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence among developing countries.
China will be at the forefront in creating an open-source BRICS community dedicated to artificial intelligence and will support cooperation for the development and application of large-scale linguistic models. Beijing will also organize seminars and training courses in the field of AI and will contribute to the construction of an open artificial intelligence ecosystem.
The proposals were presented by Xi Jinping in a statement published on Sunday by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
China will also contribute to the establishment of a cloud platform for the BRICS digital ecosystem and will organize training programs in the field of digital skills, technological exchanges and actions for the alignment of industries, Xi further stated.
He also proposed the establishment of a BRICS alliance for the training of engineers and an exchange program for young people in the field of scientific and technological innovation.
Xi’s proposals come at a time when the artificial intelligence sector is rapidly developing, with companies launching increasingly high-performance models at an accelerated pace, according to CNBC.
At the same time, artificial intelligence is subject to increasing attention regarding its risks. A researcher who has worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic stated this week that many people in the AI industry believe that artificial intelligence could “kill all mankind” by the end of this decade. Xi Jinping did not address the ongoing debate concerning the safety of artificial intelligence.
BRICS was established in 2009 as a counterweight to Western dominance and was initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Subsequently, the group expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
