The Prime Minister of Latvia, Andris Kulbergs, asserts that European leaders have finally begun to take seriously the warnings of the Baltic states regarding the threat of Russia.
“I was right. I told everyone that this would happen”, he declared for Euronews.
“We know the bear inside out, we know what it thinks, how it operates”
His statements come just a few days after a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday, just two kilometers from the Polish border, and a few weeks after Germany attributed to Moscow an attempted drone attack on Leipzig/Halle airport.
EU officials reacted swiftly, warning that Europe must prepare for a “new era of European security”. For the vulnerable countries on the northeastern flank, these attacks are not a surprise. They have long been warning that an intensification of Russia’s hostile activities on EU territory is looming.
“I was right, wasn’t I? I told everyone this would happen,” Kulbergs stated, referring to the warnings coming from the Baltic states. “We know the bear inside out, we know what it thinks, how it operates. We were occupied [by Russia] for 50 years. We know the tricks,” he said, adding that European leaders are only now understanding the gravity of the situation.
“Now everyone is listening. When I meet with [European] leaders, they understand what we are saying. It wasn’t even like this two years ago,” added the Latvian Prime Minister.
Although Kulbergs does not believe that Russia will open a “second front”, he warned that the EU must turn this understanding of the threat into concrete measures.
