The Russian army has returned to a desperate tactic from last year: that of infiltrating behind Ukrainian lines by transporting soldiers through gas pipelines. Currently, Russian troops are trying to penetrate the northern part of the Ukrainian region of Sumy, from the Russian region of Kursk, through the Urengoi-Pomary-Uzhgorod gas pipeline, reports The Moscow Times.
In the last week, the Russian army has tried at least twice to use that pipeline to infiltrate groups of Russian soldiers behind Ukrainian lines, a representative of the 8th Airborne Corps of Ukraine declared.
The Russian army has repeatedly tried to use pipelines for the covert movement of soldiers. In January, this method was used during the battles for Kupiansk, in the Kharkov region. The Ukrainian army announced that it managed to control the exits from the pipeline and “destroyed” all the Russian soldiers who used that route.
Anton Șmihal, commander of the 1st Battalion of the 429th “Achilles” Unmanned Systems (drone) Brigade, told The Washington Post that his unit has studied the pipeline schematics and destroyed potential shelter areas near the pipeline exits, so that Russian troops cannot quickly hide after they surface.
