The American company OpenAI has announced that it will provide its AI cyber defense system to Ukraine for free, to help the Kiev government protect civil infrastructure, such as hospitals and power plants, from cyber attacks, reports BBC.
According to the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine (CERT-UA), the national team for cyber incident response, Ukraine recorded nearly 6,000 attacks in 2025 alone.
The OpenAI system, Daybreak, is capable of quickly identifying vulnerabilities in digital systems and can assist in their remediation.
In accordance with the agreement between Ukraine and Sam Altman’s company, Kiev will gain access to the advanced GPT 5.6 Sol model, rivaling the Mythos and Fable models from Anthropic.
George Osborne, former British Finance Minister, currently the head of OpenAI for government relations, stated: “Protecting civil infrastructure means defending it against both physical and digital attacks, so that people can continue to live, work, and have access to essential services.”
Rafe Pilling, director for cyber threat information at the cybersecurity company Sophos, stated that Russia’s offensive cyber operations have been a “key component” of the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine since 2014.
