Ukrainian developers are equipping combat robots with microphones and speakers, transforming them into mobile “spies” that can track the movements of Russian troops, can urge enemy soldiers to surrender, and can communicate with their own military personnel in distress.
Ukraine is increasingly using unmanned ground vehicles to launch attacks, transport equipment, evacuate the wounded, and lay mines, while operators control them remotely, from positions far from danger. More and more often, these vehicles are also used for communication on the front lines and for gathering information.
Many of the robots in the expanding Ukrainian fleet are equipped with microphones, used to detect the presence of nearby Russian troops and military equipment.
Microphones and speakers: the robots that “hear” and speak with the enemy
More and more robots are equipped with speakers, which allow communication with soldiers – thus, Ukrainian military personnel in dispersed positions can call for help, and some units have even managed to transmit messages urging Russian soldiers to give up the fight.
The Ukrainian company DevDroid has recently begun to install speakers on its robots capable of broadcasting live sound or audio recordings, because “sometimes we need to convey a message to the enemy or to our own soldiers,” Oleg Fedorîșîn, the company’s research and development director, told Business Insider.
Russian soldiers who surrendered to the robots
There are video recordings of Russian soldiers surrendering to Ukrainian battle robots, including some produced by DevDroid. Other Ukrainian companies, such as Roboneers, have also shared examples of robots transmitting surrender messages to Russian troops. Some Ukrainian units claim that they have also managed to broadcast such messages through speakers mounted on aerial drones.
