Tehran has sent a proposal to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. The statement belongs to the head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araghchi.
The official is in New York, at the United Nations General Assembly. On Tuesday, he communicated to the American envoy Steve Witkoff the conditions of Tehran for reopening the strategic transport route.
“If certain conditions are met, the strait will be opened in seven days and negotiations will commence,” Abbas Araghchi declared to several foreign publications, including The New York Times (NYT) and The Guardian.
On Tuesday, the Japanese press agency Kyodo was the first to announce, citing a high-ranking Iranian official, about Tehran’s intention, writes news.ro.
According to Abbas Araghchi, quoted by NYT, the proposal presents the following conditions:
- the cessation of all hostilities in the Middle East for a period of seven days, including in Lebanon;
- unblocking of Iranian assets estimated at 12 billion dollars;
- lifting of the sanctions imposed on Iranian oil and the lifting of the American naval blockade.
The head of the MAE in Tehran asserts that if these demands are met, the Strait of Hormuz could potentially reopen within a week.
Abbas Araghchi asserts that he is awaiting a response from the United States and assures that China, whose president is on a three-day state visit to the United States, supports this proposal.
Ships that do not comply are regularly attacked, and the United States sporadically bombs the Iranian coast.
